Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was "the greatest figure of German literature as a whole" according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. He was the foremost German writer, scientist, and master of poetry, drama and the novel. This micro petit point purse is Exceptional in quality of design, execution, condition and, of course, the rarity of the two-sided drawing room scenes. Interior scenes are rare. One side depicts the laurel wreath crowning of J.W. Goethe as Poet Laureate, entitled "J.W. Goethe" below the scene. The other side of the purse is titled "The Poet" which depicts a smaller scene of a raised glass toast to Goethe. Cherubs and flowers surround the scenes. Silver and gold frame of leafy vine motif on front is studded with marcasite. Wonderful color palette of roses, purples, blues and soft greens and golds on a beige background. Minor marks on off-white kidskin leather interior. Comes with satin change purse with same kidskin leather interior. The best of the best in Petitpoint (Petit Point, Pettipoint) purses! Excellent condition throughout with very minor bending of frame - still closes perfectly with the distinctive click, and even more minor green oxidation of the fabric in the folds just under the frame hinge unseen unless under full inspection. Both issues are easily remedied by an expert.
